Opening the new Jumbo Tech blog with such a sad subject is, I believe, somehow ironic and fitting. 2011 has seen the demise of several massively influential people from IT and respect is certainly due to the people who put the 'i' in Internet and in iPhone, and Artificial Intelligence - I'm afraid that the list goes on and on.
Steve jobs took the prime position on the obituary stage, but others who were equally, if not so publicly influential were John McCarthy, George Marsaglia, Jean Bartik, David Everett Rumelhart, Max Vernon Mathews, Joseph Thomas "Tom" West III, Daniel D. McCracken, Anthony Edgar "Tony" Sale and Patrick Carl Fischer. All these people added hugely to our world of binary adding machines with skills and ideas that changed the world in some way or another. Many, many more have gone into memory this year without a splash in the press but they too will be missed.
What we need to do now is carry on the work. Some in high-profile public-facing ways, others in hard working back-room quieter areas that get little publicity. Whichever you are in, enjoy yourself and do your best while you can - one day you may make a line in the news too!
OK - onwards........
